Welcome citizens! It is time for my annual attempt to recognize (and let’s be honest: REMEMBER) what albums came out in 2013 that I dug. I tend to tool around with a list starting mid-year so I don’t forget everything — but I still forget stuff. So calling this, “comprehensive” is probably a stretch. And look, I’m sure people will disagree. That’s what people do. I’m not “right” about all of this, it’s just me bullshitting on the internet, so don’t be that guy.
The Dismemberment Plan: Uncanney Valley - THE album of the fall government shutdown…
Nine Inch Nails: Hesitation Marks
The National: Trouble Will Find Me
Placebo: Loud Like Love
BEST ALBUM OF 2013:
Vampire Weekend: Modern Vampires of the City
Look, I thought this would be a bloodier fight in my mind but I really COULD NOT in good conscience put any other album here. Let me be even more clear and point out that I DIDN’T EVEN NAME A NEW NINE INCH NAILS ALBUM HERE. Seriously, this third album by Vampire Weekend is that good. And stunningly more put together and ambitious than their second. And live? Of course just as freaking vital and tight. This album is a flat-out classic and I hope folks realize what they’re seeing with this band’s growth. Great, great stuff. I could listen to this thing all day. And I have.

Glen Hansard: Drive All Night EP (just came out but is AWESOMEEEEE)
CHVRCHES kind of coming out of nowhere and feeling established already
One half of Pearl Jam’s new Lightning Bolt album
Placebo’s “Too Many Friends” - despite a kind-of cringe-worthy opening line that’s a little too direct for my taste, it’s a fantasticly written song IMHO
